Week 24 (From 26/02/2024 to 02/03/2024) Preparing date: 25/02/2024 Teaching date: 27/02/2024 PERIOD 70: UNIT 9: CITIES OF THE WORLD Lesson 2: A CLOSER LOOK 1 I. AIMS 1. Knowledge: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to: - have more knowledge of cities of the world - use adjectives to describe a city. - recognize and pronounce correctly the sounds /əu/ and /au/ in words and in sentences. 1.1. Vocabulary: Some adjectives and nouns related to topic “Cities of the world”: palace (n); stall (n); street food (n); floating market (n); tasty (a); helpful (a). 1.2. Grammar: use adjectives to describe a city. 2. Competences By the end of the lesson, students can: - develop self-control and self-study skills. - improve pair work and group work skills and speaking skills. - enhance linguistic competence, cooperative learning and communicative competence 3. Quality By the end of the lesson, students will: - Be aware of the beauty of cities and landmarks and other places - develop their love to the country's landscape and then develop their patriotism. II. TEACHING AIDS 1. Students: Notebook, textbook, exercise book 2. Teachers: Notebook, textbook, exercise book, lesson plan, projector, tape and radio. III. TEACHING PROCEDURES 1. Class organization/ Warm up (5 mins) - Teacher asks students to watch a video and guess: “What city is it?”. - After watching video, teacher can give some questions to elicit the new lesson such as: What can you see here? How are they? Students answer: It’s Bangkok in Thailand/ We can see palace, people, temple, river, road, market/ They are crowed and beautiful. - Teacher leads in: “Today, we continue to visit some other cities in the world and learn how to describe about them.” - Teacher writes the Unit title on the board: Period 70: Unit 9: Cities of the world Lesson 2 – A closer look 1 2. New lesson 2.1. Vocabulary (5 mins) - Teacher uses suitable methods to teach vocabulary 1. palace (n): cung điện (picture and explanation) 2. stall (n): gian hàng (definition) 3. street food (n): thức ăn đường phố (picture and explanation) 4. floating market (n): chợ nổi (picture and explanation) 5. tasty (a): ngon (synonym with delicious) 6. helpful (a): sẵn sàng giúp đỡ (picture and explanation) - Teacher asks students to listen and repeat (in chorus/ individually), and pay attention to stress and pronunciation. - Students listen and repeat individually and in chorus. - Teacher corrects pronunciation for students. a/ Activity 1: Checking vocabulary (4 mins) - T asks students to check vocabulary by playing “Who’s millionaire” on the website: yourhomework.net with a vocabulary set designed by teacher before: https://yourhomework.net/vocabulary/lesson/000000100412-t - Students revise vocabulary by answering 6 questions in the game. T asks students to say aloud each answer in English to reinforce learnt words. Ex 3 (Page 28): Put the words/ phrases below under the correct pictures (3 mins). - Teacher asks students to do ex 3 (Page 28) individually, write correct words for corresponding pictures into their notebook. - Teachers asks one student to write his/ her answer on the board, then checks and gives comments. Key: 1. palace 2. floating market 3. street food 4. stall b. Activity 2: Fill each box with an adjective (Page 28) (4 mins) *Objective: - To teach student some adjectives describing a city * Content: - To fill each box with an adjective * Output: - Students remember adjectives describing a city. * Process: - Teacher gets a picture about palace in Ex 3, asks students to describe about it. Student can answer: The palace is very large and beautiful. Teacher gives comments. - Teacher links: In order to describe somewhere well, we need to know many adjectives. Let’s move on the following activity to revise adjectives. - Teacher runs through 8 adjectives and 4 features used to describe about city in the web (people, city, food, weather). - Teacher guides students to play game “Board race” in groups. (One by one student will go to the board, drag the correct words and drop them in suitable features. Group 1 will drop on the left, group 2 will drop on the right). The group having more correct words is the winner. - Teacher sets time (2 minutes) for students to do. - Teacher checks answer as a class. - If time allows, teacher encourages some students to use these adjectives (or other adjectives they know) to make a sentence describing cities in Viet Nam or abroad. Key: city: exciting, old food: tasty, delicious people: friendly, helpful weather: rainy, sunny c. Activity 3: Complete the sentences with the words in Ex 1 (4 mins) *Objective: - To help students use the adjectives in 1 in context * Content: - Complete the sentences * Output: - Students can do the tasks correctly * Process: - Teacher asks students to work in pairs. - Teacher asks pairs to read the sentences carefully and complete them with the words in 1. Go around and offer help if needed. - T asks a student to write the pair’s answer on the board and checks their answers as a class. Key: 1. sunny 2. old 3. exciting 4. friendly 5. delicious/tasty 2.2. Pronunciation (18 mins) * Recognize and identify the sounds (7 mins) Teacher asks students to say aloud the sentence, focus on the underlined words and its sound: I love the old buildings in Edinburgh. Student says aloud and says the sound in the word old. Teacher writes two vowels /əu/ and /au/ sounds on the board and guides students how to recognize and pronounce them by a video. Teacher asks students to watch the video and repeat after when necessary. Teacher elicits the common rules for the sound /əu/ and /au/ (they are commonly spelled by what letters) and write them on the board: /əʊ/ = /ə/ + /ʊ/ /aʊ/= /a:/ + /ʊ/ Letter: o Letter: ow ow ou oa Teacher gives some examples, students read after the teacher. d. Activity 4: Listen and write the words in the correct column. Then listen and repeat (5 mins) *Objective: - To help students identify and practice the /əu/ and /au/ sounds * Content: - Listen and write the words in the correct column * Output: - Students can pronounce correctly the sounds in words. * Process: - Teacher plays the recording and asks students to listen and repeat. (Play the recording as many times as necessary) - Teacher sets time, asks students to work individually and put the words in the correct column, underline the letters having the sound /əu/ and /au/. T uses an object projector to show some students’ answer and checks their answers with the whole class. - Teacher calls on some students to say the words aloud, and then write the answer in the notebook. Key: /əu/ /au/ boat house postcard crowded coast town pagoda tower Audio script: boat house town tower postcard crowded coast pagoda e. Activity 5: Listen and repeat. Pay attention to the underlined words (6 mins) *Objective: - To help student practice the sounds * Content: - Listen and repeat * Output: - Students can pronounce correctly the sounds in sentences. * Process: - Teacher allows students some time to read the sentences by themselves first. They can read silently or aloud. - Teacher plays the recording, asks students to listen and repeat the sentences. - Teacher provides further practice by dividing the class into two groups. - Teacher checks by asking students to say loudly the sentences and identify the sounds in underlined words. Keys: /əu/ snow, Tokyo, cold, boat /au/: town, crowded, around, house Audio script: The town is crowded at the weekend. There's lots of snow in Tokyo in winter. It's very cold on the boat. He's running around the house. - If time allows, teacher can ask students to practice two tongue twisters. (Students try to say the tongue twisters faster and faster, but focus on saying the sentence accurately rather than trying to say it quickly). The aim is to make class atmosphere funnier and improve students’ fluency. Two tongue twisters: 1. I know that’s not the note that Noel wrote. 2. I found a pound around the house. 3. Consolidation (1 min) Teacher asks students to summarize what they have learnt in the lesson: + Learn new words related to the topic “Cities of the world.” + Practice using some nouns and adjectives to describe a city. + Recognize and pronounce the sounds əʊ/ and /aʊ/. 4. Homework (1 min) - Learn vocabulary by heart. - Do the exercises A1,2 (WB) - Prepare the next lesson (A closer look 2) 5. Teaching experience:
